Local Marathon Runner, Ovarian Cancer Survivor Races for Hope and Awareness

Brenda Davis’ team at the 2011 NOCC Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer

Knoxville, IA (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

After completing the Quad Cities Marathon in 2009, Brenda Davis thought her body was just recovering from the grueling physical demands of racing. Davis had competed many times before, from 5k runs to half-marathons, and knew what to expect. But something didn’t seem right. Nearly a year later, Davis was still experiencing strange symptoms – she couldn’t sleep and had debilitating back aches, diarrhea, bloating, and pain during intercourse. Eventually, the abdominal pain was causing Davis to double-over in anguish and she had to miss work. Davis’ husband insisted that she see a doctor; she was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. But her symptoms still didn’t subside. Two more trips to the doctor brought no results and eventually, Davis’ sister – a nurse – stepped in and had Davis scheduled for a transvaginal ultrasound at the clinic at which she worked.

The test confirmed – Davis had softball-sized masses on each of her ovaries. On June 6, 2010, Brenda Davis was diagnosed with stage IIC Low Malignant Potential Ovarian Cancer. From the time of diagnosis to her surgical procedure – it was less than 5 days and Davis was thrown into the whirlwind of emotions a cancer diagnosis brings.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 22,280 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. An estimated 15,500 women will die from ovarian cancer. It ranks fifth amongst cancer deaths in women and is the most deadly of all the gynecological cancers. Unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed in their later stages when the prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed and treated early, when the cancer is confined to the ovary, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. That is why it is imperative that the early signs and symptoms of the disease are recognized, not only by women, but also by their families and the medical community. There is currently no early detection test for ovarian cancer. Pap tests do not detect ovarian cancer. Until there is a test, the key to early diagnosis is awareness. And the key to awareness is knowing the subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer and urging women to take early action and live.

Almost two years later, Brenda Davis is cancer-free and training to run again. Currently, she is prepping for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition – Iowa Chapter’s Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer on June 9, 2012 in West Des Moines. She also plans to run a half-marathon – the Des Moines Marathon – in the fall.

“We thank God every day for helping us get through the worst nightmare of our lives. The ‘gray ghost,’ as I call it, still lurks in my mind, but I know that I am cancer-free today,” Davis says. “If telling my story helps save the life of one person, then I will have done my job. In the mean time, I will continue to tell my story and encourage others to pay attention to the message their body is sending them.”

The Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer is the largest fundraiser and awareness event for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Organized by local Chapter volunteers, this event celebrates our survivors, remembers those we’ve lost to ovarian cancer and increases awareness about ovarian cancer. Registration fees include a t-shirt and access to all activities on the day of the event. Pledges and donations are welcome, but not required. The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition is the largest and oldest ovarian cancer awareness and education organization in the United States. Since its inception in 1995, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) has been committed to raising awareness of ovarian cancer in communities across the country and to providing education, support and hope for women with ovarian cancer and for their families. NOCC has established itself as an important national advocate for patients and families struggling with ovarian cancer. To register for the Iowa Chapter’s “Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer,” please visit nocc.kintera.org/Iowa or call 515-289-0871.

We were having a lot of fun at the Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque. Unfortunately for this beautiful Wood Duck, it was at the expense of his nap. Anyway, the duck’s laziness was my gain. I got out the tripod and 100-400 to snap a series of "portraits" of him from about 10 feet away.

The image made me think of the great Motown song from 1984 by "Rockwell"… Did you know the original recording featured both Michael and Jermaine Jackson? Nothing beats some good ole Motown!

Sing it with me now!
"I’m just an average man with an average life
I work from 9 to 5, hey, hell, I pay the price
All I want is to be left alone in my average home
But why do I always feel like I’m in the twilight zone and

I always feel like somebody’s watching me
A I have no privacy oh o oh
I always feel like somebody’s watching me
tell me is it just a dream…"

Ramada Tropics Resort Shines as Des Moines’ Wedding Headquarters

Ramada Tropics Resort in Des Moines is the best choice among Des Moines hotels for a fun, festive wedding reception.

Des Moines, Iowa (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

Love is in the air in Des Moines as the city kicked off its wedding season with a bridal exposition on Jan. 8 – and one Des Moines hotel boasts an ideal atmosphere for hosting weddings.

Ramada Tropics Resort & Conference Center can assist betrothed couples with creating a beautiful rehearsal dinner and reception site, serving a delicious menu, and assisting with music and video services. The Des Moines hotel can also provide a block of clean, comfortable hotel rooms for wedding guests.

“Hosting a spectacular wedding takes a good six to 12 months, so now is the time to begin planning your spring and summer weddings,” said Rossie Williamson, director of sales for Ramada Tropics Resort. “You can savor your wedding celebration more fully by preparing thoroughly for the big day.”

According to YourWeddingIowa.com, six to 12 months before the big day, brides-to-be and their grooms should determine a wedding budget; choose a ceremony site; select wedding party attendants; select wedding party attire; select a caterer; select reception music; select a videographer; select a florist; select a photographer; and have engagement photographs taken.

This is also the time when a couple should decide on a reception site and organize reception details.

“We know you have many choices for Des Moines hotels in which to host your rehearsal dinner, wedding reception and out-of-town guests — but we hope you will choose Ramada Tropics Resort, based on our years of experience organizing and hosting gorgeous wedding festivities,” said Williamson. “With a 5,200-square-foot ballroom and over 10,000-square-feet of flexible breakout space, the Ramada Tropics Resort & Conference Center is an elegant Des Moines wedding reception venue.”

Ramada Tropics offers an extensive wedding catering menu including a variety of entrée and dessert choices certain to satisfy each and every guest.

“We take care of every last detail of your wedding reception, down to accessories like table linens and napkin holders. Our experienced and fully-equipped staff will serve all of your wedding event needs,” assured Williamson.

Williamson said about four to six months before the wedding, hotel rooms should be reserved for out-of-town guests and the bridal party. Ramada Tropics Resort is home to attractions that all wedding guests can enjoy – from bridesmaids and groomsmen, to flowers girls and ring bearers, to the entire extended family that has traveled to attend the wedding.

Ramada Tropics has 166 freshly-renovated rooms and suites, and poolside lodging is available next to the 18,000-square-foot indoor Buccaneer Bay water park. The Buccaneer Bay features three swimming pools, two 150-foot tube water slides, a large pirate ship, a hot tub and a poolside Tiki bar with fun, fruity tropical drinks.

The Tropics has extravagant two-room suites available, with generous living rooms and cozy king- or queen-sized beds. These suites feature two flat-screen televisions and comfortable sofa sleepers.

Ramada Tropics also stands out among Des Moines hotels by offering two Presidential Suites, which provide the ultimate in luxury. With three flat-screen televisions, two bedrooms, a living room, wet bar, fireplace, refrigerator and microwave in each Presidential Suite, guests will fully be able to relax and enjoy their stay.

“The Presidential Suite is luxurious and comfortable – a perfect room for the bride and groom to stay on the night of the wedding reception,” said Williamson. “They can wake up the next morning to a nice breakfast served in one of our banquet rooms – and invite remaining guests to watch them open their wedding gifts before jetting off on the honeymoon.”

All guest rooms and suites come with several passes to the Buccaneer Bay water park.

The Des Moines hotel also features an on-site restaurant, Castaways Bar & Grill, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Reno Collier A former P.E. teacher, West Virginia native Reno Collier has endeared himself to a wide range of audiences from college students to church softball teams. With a contagious laugh and friendly, almost intoxicating demeanor, his observations often find him recalling mishaps of his West Virginia cousins, his Scottish heritage, unruly in-laws and alien abductions. Collier's journey began at the Punchline Comedy Club inAtlanta, where he tended bar to supplement his day job. One night he found himself on stage during the weekly open mic night. His unique outlook on life – mixed with a six-pack – was instantly popular and provided a platform to launch a career as a comedian. He now tours nationwide and makes regular appearances on TV and radio programs.
